The late Eamon Law
A popular young father and talented sportsman died after playing a game of handball - a sport in which he excelled.
Eamon Law (37) from Mullinavat died just a week after he attended his daughter Emer's confirmation.
The father of two had just started playing a singles match at the Talbots Inch handball alley on the Freshford Road when he suddenly collapsed and died on the court. He was brought to the nearby St Lukes Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Mr Law was recognised as one of the best right side double players in Irish handball. He won the All- Ireland minor 40 x 20 doubles with DJ Carey in 1988 and 1989. He also won the 40 x 20 under-21 doubles with Graham O'Brien in 1991 and won the 60 x 30 intermediate doubles with his long-standing partner Pearse O'Keefe in 1997. Mr Law was also a junior handball doubles champion in 1999 in partnership with Eddie Burke. He won national league honours with the county among numerous other titles and tournaments.
For the last two years he had been playing in the senior grade. Sadly he was due to play in the first round of the 2007 championship in a few weeks time. The popular sportsman was also a life- long member of the Mullinavat GAA and Handball club and was a superb hurler in his younger days.
Large crowds turned out to pay their respects at the removal which took place on Sunday. His funeral Mass was celebrated by father Liam Barron at St Beacons Church in Mullinavat where a guard of honour was formed by his friends at Mullinavat GAA Club and handballers all over the county.
Members of the Kells Handball Club, where he was a member, described him as a true gentleman in sport and extended their deepest sympathies to his heartbroken family.
Mr Law is survived by his wife Babs, son Gary, daughter Emer, mother Patsy, brothers Liam, Michael and Denis and a large circle of relatives and friends.
