Cody, Ray

May 25, 2007
The late Ray Cody Ray Cody of 36 Friary Street, passed away on April 21st, 2007. He was a gregarious character, of cheerful disposition, leaving a positive mark and lifting the hearts of everybody who met him. He enjoyed a varied career and showed very early signs of entrepreneurship. He was never afraid to do anything in order to keep his family afloat and in fact at the beginning of his career his opened, with his wife Moira, a grocery shop in which he stocked his own home-grown vegetables while at the same time continuing to sell insurance throughout the country. He then entered the printing business in 1962 along with Martin Grace and so began his lifetime involvement in Kilkenny Modern Printers. Ray brought to the company his boundless energy, enthusiasm and ability to make friends, ensuring that Modern Printers was to become one of the finest printing business in the South East. When asked to comment on Modern Printers, Ray used to jokingly reply that "Modern Printers is the second best printing business in the South East". When pressed on which was the best he would reply "I don't know which is the best all I know is that Modern Printers is the second best". However Pay's family believe that he showed much earlier signs of entrepreneurial skills whilst growing up in The Central Hotel in John St (now Langton House). He used to steal and lock away his siblings' toys and then, when they had given up searching his would produce them and sell them back to them. This was charismatic personality - he actually got away with it. Ray played hurling into his early 40s. He played for Eire Og and James Stephens hurling clubs and won a Senior County Championship medal for Eire Og in 1944. He continued a hearty interest in hurling throughout his life and rarely missed a championship match or All Ireland final which he used to attend with his great friend Dave DeLoughry. When he gave up hurling he naturally took to golf. He enjoyed every minute of being associated with the game and took on various positions on the club committee ie Competition Secretary, Club Captain in 1983 and Club President in 1991 to 1992. The highlights of his golfing career were winning the Four Ball Club Championship during his captaincy year with his captaincy year with is good friend Eamonn Crosse, and qualifying with another especially close friend Carl Widger for the same competition another year as leading qualifier. Ray had a great and active life and lived life to the full right up to the end. He will be very sadly missed by Pat, Frank, Blanaid, Liam and Ray Junior, by his brother Des, his sister Sheila and all his many friends. Ray's daughter Blanaid, sons Pat, Frank, Liam and Ray, brother Des, sister in law Roisin, Carmel, Patricia and Irma, brothers in law Robin, Raymond and Watt and grandchildren wish to thank all who attended removal to the church, funeral Mass and funeral.
