The late Christy Power Christy Power, 10 Connolly Park, Carrick on Suir died at St Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel on March 4th 2007, following a brief illness. Christy was born on Christmas Day 1922 and in September 1952 he married Mai Veale, Mitchell Terrace, Dungarvan. Throughout his life, Christy was a prominent sportsman and hurled for Clonea Power during the club's halcyon days in the 1940s and early 1950s. He played in five county finals but missed our on a county medal, losing to Erins Own by a point in 1947 and to Mount Sion in 1949. He was renowned for his scoring ability and especially noted for his three goals playing for Waterford against Kilkenny at Nowlan Park and for scoring seven points for Clonea when Charlie Ware was at his direct opponent. He continued to be a staunch supporter of Waterford hurling and travelled on many occasions to matches in their quest for another senior All-Ireland title. Christy took up golf relatively late in life and his hurling skills obviously helped him as he was an accomplished golfer over forty years. He won two president's prize and a captain's prize and was conferred with honary membership of Carrick on Suir Golf Club in 2002 having served as handicap secretary for eleven years. He began his working life with Carrick on Suir builder Tommy Finn before joining Miloko Chocolate Crumb factory where he continued until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Third ORder of St Francis and never forgot his weekly hour at the Eucharistic Adoration in St Nicholas Church. He was an avid card player and regularly played Progressive 25 in Glen comeragh and Rathgormack and he also enjoyed his jockey grandson Ian Power. Christy is the last of his family generation having been predeceased by his brothers Bill and Fr Albie OFM and his sisters Josie, Margaret, Emma, Bridget and Sr Vincent, Mercy Order. His wife Mai died in 1962 aged only 34, which left Christy a widower for 45 years. His remains were removed from Walsh's funeral home to St Molleran's Parish Church and burial in the family plot in St Mary's cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Tom Flynn PP. Clonea GAA Club and Carrick on Suir Gold Club provided a Guard of Honour. Readings at Mass were by his son Paddy and daughter in law Lena. Prayers of the faithful by Peter Veale, Brian Power, Pat Veale, Bridget Ormonde, Owen Power and Eddie O'Shea. Gifts at the Offertory carried by Fada Coady, Kathleen Kenny, Lal Holden, Chrissie Gleeson and Marion Power. He is survived by sons Paddy (Dungarvan). Larry (Dunbane) and Eddir (Ennis); grandchildren, daughters in law, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
