Power, John

The late John Power Carrick on Suir lost an outstanding sportsman and community activist in the passing of John Power, Seskin who died at Suirmount Nursing Home on November 1, 2006. John was born in 1932 to the late Maurice and Joanna Power, Cregg and educated at Whitechurch N.S. He joined E Walsh's Electrical Business, Main Street as an apprentice electrician and when qualified went to work with Sampsons, Cahir. He emigrated to Cardiff in 1956 and plied his trade in the steel works before moving to Birmingham and Manchester where he opened his own electrical business. In 1957 he married Carrick Beg girl Peggy Gee, St Mollerans and in 1976 they returned to Carrick on Suir where they opened an electrical shop on Main Street. John retired in 2002 and built a home in Seskin but soon succumbed to failing health. In his youth, he played championship hurling with Swan and was selected as fullback on the County Minor team in 1950. Tipperary wont he Munster title, but lost to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final and in later years he took up golf. John and Peggy loved to travel and regularly drove through Europe and made many friends along the way. He was a friendly person, a good neighbour and dedicated to his wife and family. John had a sharp brain for business but also used it to good effect in his community. He was on the Management Committee of the Credit Union, a member of the Carrick Beg and Windgap Parish Council, Crehana School committee and a Minister of the Eucharist in the Parish Church. The funeral was from Walsh's Funeral Home to St Molleran's Parish Church and burial in Rathgormack Cemetery after Requiem Mass. Readings by nephew John Power and grand niece Irene Power and grandnieces Claire and Late McCarthy and music by Mala Raggett. Clergy who officiated at the obsequies included Fr Tom Flynn PP, St Molleran's; Fr Pat Cooney PP, St Nicholas, Fr Curran PP, Rathgormack and Fr Michael Cullinane. John will be sadly missed by his wife Peggy; sons Maurice and Raymond; daughters in law Benny and Marie; grandchildren Caroline, Fiona, Valerie and Sinead; brothers Maurice, Jim, Billy; sisters Maura O'Regan and Ann Fitzpatrick; nieces, nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.
