The late John Sheridan The win in the All-Ireland senior hurling final was tinged with sadness for Kilkenny star Tommy Walsh. Hours before the match with Cork, his uncle, retired Sgt Major John Sheridan, passed away. The 81-years-old had taken ill on Thursday and his condition deteriorated over the weekend. John made sure that his nephew was not told of his condition before the match and he sent Tommy a good luck card beforehand. But on Monday night, Tommy Walsh left the Liam McCarthy Cup homecoming celebrated early to attend the removal of his uncle's remains from Johnstown Funeral Home to St John's Church. At the time of his retirement from the army in August last year, John Sheridan held the highest rank for a non-commissioned officer. He trained hundreds of soldiers who served all over the world. The dedicated husband, father, grandfather and soldier led a great life and was a keen sportsman, international boxing referee and was deeply involved with the Marble Boxing Club. He won a number of all army shooting titles and was an expert in small arms. Most of all he was a giving and generous person who adored his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife Rena and family, Stephen, John, Ann Marie, Mark and Geraldine. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren. His mother Annie is still alive but his father passed away Christmas 2005.
