Murphy, Johnny

March 31, 2006
The late John Murphy The death took place of John (Johnny) Murphy, the last surviving member of a family steeped in the history of hurling in kilkenny. Johnny was a member of an outstanding minor team which beat Dublin in the Leinster final in 1942 which incidentally was played as a curtain raiser to the Senior All-Ireland final of 1943 when Cork beat Antrim in a mismatch. The 1943/44 Leinster minor was abandoned due to wartime travel restrictions. He answered the call of De Valera and joined the army and was the proud possessor of a service medal for 1946/47. In 1949 Johnny played centrefield with Martin McEvoy and won the Leinster junior title of that year. He took great pride in the fact that Jack Mulcahy, Paddy Moran, John Kinsella, Tony Kelly and Mick Phelan were all his nephews. His brother Andy played in goal for Danesfort. Johnny was a lifetime active member of the Legion of Mary attached to St Canice's Hospital and was like a "breath of fresh air" always willing to help and encourage both patients and staff. To quote a friend, Johnny was one of nature's gentlemen. To his nieces, nephews, their families and friends, we tender our sincere sympathy. He will always be in our memories.
