The late Kieran Moran
On January 22, 2006 Kieran Moran was taken to his final reward, following a long battle, borne with great courage.
A man of many parts, he had a great sense of humour, loved life and sport, especially hurling and soccer.
He was also known to sing the odd song with very little coaxing. He didn't always need an occasion.
He wore his county and club colours with pride. His only worry being that after following his county team all the way through the year, where would the All-Ireland ticket come from. Luckily, a ticket was always obtained.
Testimony to his support of his county team was in the fact that his most admired hurler, DJ Carey, attended his funeral. That would have made him so proud.
Kieran lived in Ardra, Castlecomer for most of his life and that gave him a great sense of pride.
He had great neighbours and many a Sunday was spent playing hurling in the "28 acres" with no rules involved. Indeed, there was rarely a referee. Skittles was another favourite pastime, but who was counting the score.
The odd car that happened by on such a Sunday usually ended up with the score being contradicted. Happy Times!
Another of Kieran's hobbies was playing cards. His late father Willie and late brother Paddy were two of his playing partners.
Many a hand of cards gave rise to great controversy and fun.
Soccer came latterly to Kieran in the form of Ardra Rovers FC, and training was a word he never gave much time to, but with a manager who happened to be his brother, he could be sure of 10 minutes at the start or the end of a game and he always gave his all for the team.
Kieran encompassed so many people and organisations but the up most in his life was his family whom he loved dearly and held in great esteem.
His friends were always there for him and he was so proud of them all.
The huge turn-out at his obsequies was a fitting tribute to theman.
The guard of honour formed by Ardra Rovers FC, Ormonde Brick, Erin's Own, Deen Celtic, Wellie Race Majorgrettes and committee, friends, neighbours from Ardra and Kiltown. This had to be the largest formation the writer has seen in a long number of years.
He will be greatly missed by all his family, his wife Joanne; children Cara and Oisin; sisters Eileen, Liz, Bernadette and Eithne; aunt Ann; uncles Richard and Ton; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, mother-in-law, extended family and a host of very loyal friends.
