Fitzpatrick, Peter

August 31, 2003
The late Peter Fitzpatrick Peter Fitzpatrick of Assumption Place, Kilkenny, was known as Petey Fitz to his many friends. As a schoolboy in St John's de le Salle, Petey was a brilliant hurler. Once before a schools' final, his father promised him a tanner - sixpence in old money - for every goal scored. Petey duly ended up with half a crown (30 old pence) richer after the game. He was also a good footballer, representing Kilkenny in the minor grade on a team narrowly beaten by Wicklow in the first round of the Leinster Championship. On leaving school, Petey followed his father into the defence forces, where he was assigned to the Curragh Command. There he worked as a cook, an he won an All-Ireland medal with the camp hurling team in 1952. After leaving the Army he took up employment with the old P&T as a member of the outdoor team. He worked for over 20 years there and was held in high esteem. On his retirement Petey spent nearly all his spare time working in the O'Loughlins Gaels GAA club complex. There he was in charge of keeping the dressing-rooms spick and span for the many teams that used them. Fr Tom Murphy was the principal celebrant at a requiem mass and he paid a glowing tribute to Petey. Sincere sympathy to his brothers Paddy, Frank and Michael, his sisters Kitty, Gretta and Teresa, their families and his many friends from the Army, the old P&T and O'Loughlin Gaels.
