John Hennessy dies at 101 In his 102nd year, bachelor John Hennessy has died after a long and healthy life. The Templetuohy farmer died on October 8 at Padre Pio Nursing Home in Holy Cross, where he had lived for the past six years. Son of Jim and Margaret (nee Travers), John was brother of the late San Hennessy of Main Street, Urlingford. He also had two sisters Josie and Mary, who predeceased him. John was born in June 1904 in Tullow-MacJames, Templetuohy and lived there his whole life as his family had done for 200 years. He was a great family man, although he never married he was very well liked throughout the community. A greyhound enthusiast, Mr Hennessy was a founding member of the Templetuohy Coursing club which was established in 1928. He was also a founding member of the local Fianna Fail cumann and was recognised by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern for his services at a recent Fianna Fail ceremony in Templemore. Mr Hennessy was a long-time follower of the GAA an at one time played football for Templetuohy at club level. He was a staunch Tipperary hurling supporter. The farmer also enjoyed the small orchard on his land. During a lifetime of good health, Mr Hennessy didn't visit a doctor until he was in his 90s. He attributed his healthy life to his diet of fat bacon and cabbage, and given g up smoking at the age of 84. His remains reposed at Doyle's Funeral Home, Urlingford, with the removal to Church of the Sacred Heart, Templetuohy and after Mass burial took place in Templereigh Cemetery. He was buried in an oak coffin. Afterwards family and friends gathered in Everard's pub to celebrate his life. Mr Hennessy is survived by his nephews, the Hennessy brothers Jim, Joe, Donald and John; niece Margaret; grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grand-nephew, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
