Brennan, Larry

February 02, 2006
The Late Larry Brennan Larry Brennan died in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny. Those close to him knew that he had suffered bravely a number of painful episodes over the past few years. He carried his pain elegantly and in a fashion befitting his two great interests - hurling and the FCA. The wonderful guard of honour formed by both these groups was a fitting mark of respect. Also paying tribute were a number of his former workmates from Flemings Fireclay. Larry was one of two life presidents of Cloneen GAA club and it was fitting that the other, Fr Jerry Joyce PP, who had shared some nostalgic moments with him in hospital recently, should take part in the funeral service. At the head of the cortege as it made it's way to the parish church was Joe Pyke, chairman, Kilkenny GAA Bord na nÓg, which Larry attended for 15 years as Cloneen delegate. He was buried on the day Kilkenny won the under 21 hurling final. He derived great pleasure a week earlier when following the minor victory, the senior team beat Cork to draw level with the Munster County with 28 All-Ireland senior titles each. Larry leaves a legacy of new postitive under-age structures, the benefits of which are now being seen with the great improvements and the popularity of juvenile hurling in the parish. He took great pride in the his participation, especially in the difficult role of fund raising, in the planning, purchase and development of the fabulous new playing pitch and club complex in Chatsworth. As well as his deep rooted love for the GAA, Larry was profoundly religious family man and a real republican. He is survived by his wife Anne, and extended family.
