The Late Robert McBride The death has occurred in Knockeen Nursing Home, Wexford of Robert McBride, Ferrycarrig. He was 102. Born in Tullamore, Co. Offaly on April 9 1902, he moved to Waterford wirh his parents at an early age and then to Derrynahinch, Ballyhael, in 1906, where his father has taken up duty with the Railway Company, later CIE. Bobby went to school in Ballyhale, where he learned to swing the camán. There began his love of hurling, a game he followed with great enthusiasm down through the years. He was a member of the Knocktopher hurling team and was their goalkeeper in 1931 when they beat Galmoy in the Junior County Final in Nowlan Park. He was also a member of the old IRA during the Black and Tans regine and was involved in an ambush at Knockwilliam Bridge. He worked for the Railway Company all his life and was appointed inspector in 1950. His employment took him to Kildare, Offaly and Clare. He was a violinist of considerable merit and enjoyed his sojourn in Clare and the county's music immensely. His treasured possession was O'Neill's Book of Irish Music, which he bought in 1920. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth three daughters and sons-in-law, brother, Peter, and grandchildren. 29th November 2003 Courtesy of the Kilkenny People
