The Late Albert Madden
The Funeral took place in Mullinahone of Albert Madden, formerly of Killagh. Albert's death took place unexpectedly the pervious week at North Hall in Middlesex. He was 40 years of age. Albert had worked in England in the building industry since he emigrated there 17 years ago. Before going to England Albert was a well-known and accomplished sportsman. He was involved in all the local teams and was an exceptional gaelic footballer and soccer player. He was also a promising hurler and a tape survives of Albert in action against Ballingarry in the South Tipperary Junior Final and replay of 1986.
Back in 1984 the centenary year of the GAA Mullinahone footballers took part in a seven-a-side tournament in Coolagh and Albert Madden won the Player of the Tournament award.
As a mark of respect his coffin was draped with the Mullinahone colours and was carried into and from St Michaels Church by six of his friends from youth and work. The majority of the pall bearers were closely associated with the local GAA Club. Albert's remains reposed in Bretts Funeral Parlour and were removed from there to St Michael's Church. His funeral took place on Sunday and he was buried in St Michael's Cemetery in Killaghy in the family plot where Alberts father Larry Madden was interred earlier this year.
The Mass was celebrated by Fr John McGrath who also received the remains into St Michaels Church. Serving the Mass was Albert's niece Caira Murphy. The two readings were given by his nephew and niece Paul and Fidelma Madden while Carina Walton sang the responsorial psalm and Kevin Hickey played sacred music.
The prayers of the faithful were recited by Albert's nieces Treasa Madden, Nicola Murphy, Sinead Murphy and Ciara Murphy. The gifts were brought to the altar by his brother Eddie Madden and his sister Joan Murphy. A reflection was read at the end of the funeral mass at the behest of a number of Albert's friends.
It was called 'I'm Free' and was delivered by one of Albert's old friends and neighbours John McCormack. The message was very much in keeping with Albert's life. As the cortege left the church for Killaghy Cemetery Carina Walton sand and inspiring rendition of 'Coming Home'. Burial took place in Killaghy Cemetery in the presence of a good congregation. Among those who were present were a contingent of the Irish army with whom the Madden family are closely associated. Albert is survived by his four year old son Dylan Madden. His also survived by his mother Jenny Madden, his brothers Eddie and Olly and his sister Joan Murphy (Callan). Eddie Madden resides in Monaghan while Olly Madden who resides in San Francisco was unable to travel for his brother's funeral. Over the years Olly and Albert had kept in close touch. Albert is also survived by his brother-in-law Jim Murphy (Callan) and his sister-in-law Ann Madden (Monaghan) as well as by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. To all we extend our sympathy. May the soul of Albert Madden rest in peace. He has finally come home to Killaghy.
