The Late Julia Casey The death occurred recently at St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, of Julia Casey (nee Maye) Kilcarrig Street. Daughter of the late Patrick and Josephine Maye, the family lived off Regent Street, Bagenalstown, Julia was educated by the Presentation Sisters. Her childhood was spent swimming and playing camogie in the Bog. Julia played camogie for both her club and at county level and she went on to win two county championship camogie medals with Erin's Own Club, often cycling to camogie matches in Kilkenny. Before her marriage she served her time as a dressmaker with Mrs Douglas in Regent Street, where she made clothes for many neighbours and friends and later for her children. She married John Casey in 1951 and moved to the family home in Kilcarrig Street, where they reared five sons and three daughters. She devoted her time to raising her family and helping out in the family business. When John died in 1997 she was a source of great strength to her children. Julia was a member of the Carlow branch of the Active Retirement Association where she made many friends. She also enjoyed twice yearly trips to places of interest around Ireland with her sister Lil. She regularly attended 10am Mass in her parish church and enjoyed a chat with her neighbours afterwards. One of Julia's loves was food and her speciality was Irish stew, which she cooked without fail every Saturday for her family. She had a great sense of humour and a gentle and caring way of dealing with people within her family and circle of friends. People loved to be around her and she had a listening ear and a friendly word of everyone. Removal was to St Andrew's Church, where funeral mass was concelebrated by Fr Pierce Murphy, PP Bagenalstown and Fr Gerry Byrne PP Graignamanagh. Burial was in the Cemetery of the Assumption. She is survived by her sons Sean, Brendan, Frankie, Paddy and Gerard; daughters Marion, Julie and Noeleen; sisters Peggy and Lil; daughters-in-law; sons-in-law, grandchildren Thelma, Sinead, Johnathan, Aveline, Emmet, Emma, Andrew, Orlagh, Aoife, Niall, Padraic, Kieran, Denise, Andrew and Conor; other relatives and friends.
