Doheny, Jeremiah

August 05, 2005
The Late Jeremiah Doheny Jeremiah (Jer) Doheny died suddenly on July 10. He had just celebrated his 86th birthday on July 4. He was born in Gurteen in 1919, son of the late Jeremiah and Annie Doheny. He was predeceased by his brothers Pierce and John and his sister Mary Ellen. His father Jeremiah captained Kilkenny to their first All-Ireland title in 1904. Jer started work in Clover Meats, Waterford, in 1935, at the age of sixteen, cycling down from Ballycallan. Later he served time with butchers in Birr and Tullow and in 1944 he opened his first shop in Kilkenny. He ran a very successful butcher's shop at 66 High Street, Kilkenny, for over forty years. In 1949 he married Stella Bowe from Turkstown, Piltown and they had seven children. Stella died suddenly in 1989 and Jer moved to 19 Lower Patrick Street to set up a small butcher's shop in Walkin Street. He retired from business in 1994 after fifty years. After Jer retired he loved attending daily Mass in St Patrick's church or the Friary. He was a devout man and he visited Mounty Mellaray regularly. In fact he was on his way there on the day he died. Jer was very proud of his Ballycallan and Tullaroan roots. He was a keen Kilkenny supporter and attended many All-Ireland finals in Croke Park. He was a regular in Nowlan Park for years. He played for many hurling teams including Waterford in a Munster final. In his latter years Jer became a gardener of note. His garden in Patrick Street became oasis of colour and fragrance and he took great delight in tending his flowers and creating such a wonderful garden. He was a familiar sight to many people working in his garden and he enjoyed chatting to everyone. The night before he died Jer had been in Tullaroan to celebrate the golden jubilee of his cousin's ordination and he had met many friends and relations. So it was fitting that his cousin Fr Michael Keoghan should celebrate his funeral Mass at St Patrick's Church. Jer was laid to rest beside his wife Stella in Foulkstown Cemetery. Jer will be remembered as a kind and caring person, a fair and honest businessman and a loving family man. He is survived by his sons Dermot, Richard, Gary and Sean and daughters Mary, Anne and Aideen May he rest in peace. Courtesy of The Kilkenny People 5th August 2005
