The Late Ted Kelly
The death occurred at St Francis Hospice, Raheny, of Mr Ted Kelly Raheny. Formerly of Killarney, Thomastown, Ted was a son of the late Timothy and Ellen Kelly. He went to school in Thomastown Boys' NS. He won school league medals in 1939 and 1940. He was captain in 1940.
A hurler of note, he went on to win minor, junior and senior hurling championships with Thomastown. He later joined Crokes GAA Club in Dublin and was a member of the Dublin Senior team which beat Wexford in the Leinster final in 1952.
Ted scored three goals in the match. In the 1960's he joined Donabate Golf Club and was a very successful golfer. In recognition of his many achievements he was made an honourary member of the club.
The attendance at his funeral reflected the high esteem in which he was held in his adopted county.
Ted worked with the telephone exchange for most of his life. He met his wife Phil through his work. He was predeceased by his brother Tim, in 1992. Tim won an All-Ireland hurling championship with Kilkenny in 1963.
Remains were received on Corpus Christ Church, Homefarm road, Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Philip Curran, assisted by Fr Frank and Fr Dan O'Gorman, Woollengrange, friends of the family.
The lessons were read by his brother Tony, Dublin and Miriam his niece.
Ted's brother Michael Kelly, '57 captain Kilkenny hurling team, gave a reflection.
Only a few months ago Ted was one of eight surviving members of the 1939 Thomastown School hurling champions honoured at a function in Kilkenny Golf Club.
A special medal was minted courtesy of the schools' Primary Board and each player also received a Jerpoint Glass inscribed goblet.
It is fitting that for a man so deeply involved in hurling all his life that his obituary should conclude with the following poem:
A Hurler's Prayer
Grant me, O Lord a hurlers skill,
With strength of arm and speed of limb,
Unerring eye for the flying ball,
And courage to match them what'er befall,
May my aim be steady, my stroke be true,
My actions manly, my misses few,
And no matter what way the game may go,
May I part in friendship with every foe,
When the final whistle for me is blown,
And I stand at last at God's judgement throne,
May the great referee when he calls my name,
Say you hurled like a man, you played the game.
Ted is survived by his wife Philomena, Drumcondra: brothers Liam, USA; Tony , Dublin, Michael, Bennettsbridge, Gerard, London, Frank, Australia, Sisters Breda, Thomastown, Margaret, Australia, Angela Thomastown, Kathleen, Killarney, Thomastown: nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Interment was at Glasnevin Cemetery
