The Late Patsy Lacey
Conahy Shamrocks GAA club lost one of its greatest players with the death of Patsy Lacey. Patsy was a native of Lisnafunchion but lived for many years of Greenfields Kilkenny.
He was a member of the St Colman's (Conahy) minor hurling side which reached the County final in 1961 but lost out to Mooncoin on a score of 6-8 to 6-3. Long overdue county championship success was eventually to come Patsy's way in 1976 when Conahy Shamrocks won the County Junior hurling championship defeating Carrrickshock on a score of 1-12 to 0-8. A second championship success was to follow in 1977 when Conahy Shamrocks won their third Intermediate hurling championship defeating Dicksboro on a score of 3-9 to 1-14.
Patsy played in goal on both occasions and was a very safe custodian. Sometime later Patsy was to become involved with Dicksboro and his commitment to his adopted club was no less that to his beloved Conahy Shamrocks. His own sons continue to play prominent roles with Dicksboro. The esteem in which Patsy was held was evident by the huge procession at his funeral from Aut Even Hospital to St Canice's Church when members of both the Conahy Shamrocks and Dicksboro clubs formed a guard of honour.
Patsy would probably have been embarrassed by the whole occasion but it was an entirely fitting tribute to a true gentleman. During his period of illness Patsy never once complained and bore his cross with the utmost dignity.
