The Late Chris Walsh A man who gave a lifetime of service to the community for which he cared passionately has passed away. Chris Walsh, Trenchardstown, Tullaroan, Co. Kilkenny was a great father, successful business man and an accomplished local correspondent with the Kilkenny People for over 30 years. He lived in the village for the last 60 years where he carried on a successful butcher and grocery business. One of his great loves was hurling and he was president of Tullaroan GAA club for the last 25 years, up to the time of his death. He followed the fortunes of the club with great fervour and rejoiced when any of the club players made inter-county teams. He constantly promoted the Lory Meagher Centre and was instrumental in setting up the water scheme which serves the local population. He was a great Fianna Fail activist and former Senator Mick Lanigan described him as a true Fianna Fail man with high ideals. "He was mad about Tullaroan and was deeply committed to its development," Mr Lanigan said. He died on March 11 after a brief illness bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career, having lived a truly worthwhile life. He was a regular visitor to the Kilkenny People office and made sure that Tullaroan received the billing it deserved in the local news section of the newspaper. His kind way and mannerly demeanour endeared him to all. There were huge numbers at his removal and funeral bearing testimony to his popularity and to the esteem in which the Walsh family is held. At the obsequies, the hurling club formed a guard of honour. The family were thankful to the local ladies who provided tea and sandwiches for the mourners in the community hall. Chris Walsh may be gone but he will not be forgotten by the people of Tullaroan for whom he did so much. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughters, Esther Kennedy, Angela Dunne, Claire McCarron, Geraldine Lawlor and Ann Walsh; sons, Dick, Jimmy, Joe and Noel; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and a wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his three brothers Mick, Jim and Tommy. By Sean Keane Courtesy of the Kilkenny People 29th March 2005
