The Late Michael O'Shea Michael O'Shea, Kennedy Terrace, Carrick Beg, died in Suirmount Nursing Home at the age of 75. He was born in Clonroche, County Wexford. He was a son of the late Denis and Ina O'Shea. Denis was a garda. Following a brief illness, Mick O'Shea spent short periods in Cork and Waterford Regional Hospitals before finally living in Suiremount Nursing Home, Carrig Beg, From an early age, Mick became involved in sport and when the family lived in Gowran he hurled with the local club Young Irelands and captained the Kilkenny minor team that lost the 1947 All-Ireland final after a replay. He began working in Irish Tanners, Portlaw in 1950 where he trained as a hide inspector. He then transferred to Plunder and Pollak Tannery as a foreman in the Hide Store, a position he held until the closure in 1985. Apart from his hurling ability, Mick was a noted athlete and competed in championships in Kilkenny, Waterford and Tipperary with his good friends, the late Sean Hickey, Pill Road and Derek Walsh, Curraghmore who now lives in London. In 1959, Mick married Carrick Beg girl Eileen Torpey. They lived in Kenndy Terrace and Mick became very involved with St Molleran GAA Club as a player and selector and he played inter-county hurling with Waterford. He had previously played with Carrick Swan. Throughout his married life, Mick retained a great interest in St Molleran's particularly when his sons Michael and Jerome played with the club. A few weeks before his passing, the club won a county football title in Waterford and Mick was very proud to show photographs of himself and members of the team when they brought the cup to Suirmount Nursing Home. Funeral was from Walsh's Funeral Home to St Molleran's Parish Church and burial was at St Mary's Cemetery after Requiem Mass, celebrated by Fr Tom Flynn PP. Hymns were by Mala Raggett, including some of Mick's favourite songs 'Boolavouge'. At the graveside, it was fitting that Dermot Foley sang 'Dungarvan my Home Town', a song Mick sang after many a Waterford success. Mick is survived by his wife Eileen; sons Michael and Jerome; daughters Ina, Jackie and Elaine; sons-in-law Eamon, Martin and Sean; daughters-in-law Josephine and Martha, 12 grandchildren; brothers Denis and Stephen; brothers-in-law Michael Torpey, Paddy O'Gorman; sisters-in-law Phil Murphy, Fada Coady, Tish O'Gorman, Muriel O'Shea and Mary O'Shea (England); nephews, nieces and friends.
