Brennan, Denis

May 31, 2003
The Late Denis Brennan A lifelong member of James Stephens GAA Club died after a short illness. Denis Brennan of St Fiacre's Place, Kilkenny, was a former committee member and team mentor. He was 76. He was popularly known as Din. He had retired from the outdoor staff of Kilkenny Co. Council and spent much of his leisure time following the fortunes of his beloved James Stephens. During the Club's successful period in the Seventies he was a member of the steering committee and took charge of the Club's stock of hurleys. On the night before he took ill some weeks ago, Mr Brennan had been chatting about the game of hurling, and reminiscing. He loved to recall the halcyon years of Kilkenny hurling and of James Stephens in particular. He recalled the sporting era of the Village right back to the Forties. He was an honest man, an excellent conversationalist who loved to trace the history of local hurling families. To the end he stayed loyal to the Village and visited the Club's Larchfield social club nightly for an update on Gaelic games. Rosary at Hehir's Funeral Home last was attended by committee members and supporters of James Stephens Club. At his funeral, members formed a guard of honour in tribute to a man who contributed much in a Club he loved so well. He is survived by his wife Babs, sons Pat and Denis, daughter Breda, brother Paddy, sister Joanie Liverpool and grandchildren. Remains were removed to St Patrick's Church, Kilkenny and burial was at Foulkstown Cemetery after Requiem Mass. Courtesy of The Kilkenny People May 2003
