The Late Sergeant Willie Smith The death has occurred of retired Garda Sergeant Willie Smith. He died in Waterford city, and had a long association with Kilkenny city and county. He was born in Co. Cavan and served in a number of different stations in the county. In the late 1960s and early 70s he worked in Bennettsbridge. He played with the local GAA club and won a county junior football championship medal in 1969 when Bennettsbridge beat Lamogue, Callan. When he moved to Kilkenny city he immersed himself in the affairs of James Stephens GAA club. He set up home on the Waterford Road and was vice-chairman of the club for ten years. He was instrumental in setting up the juvenile committee at the club and was its first chairman, a position he held for a decade. His four sons, Jim, Anthony, Barry and Liam all played with the club. Sgt Smith retired on the Dunmore Road, Waterford city and was buried in Ballygunner cemetery, after Requiem Mass in Waterford. Many of the officers he worked with attended the funeral along with a large circle of friends from Kilkenny. He survived by his wife, Mary, sons Jim, Anthony, Barry and Liam and daughter, Miriam.
