Doyle, Peter

January 31, 2014
It was fitting that a minute's silence was observed at Sunday's ploughing match in Danesfort for the late Peter Doyle, Luffany, Mooncoin. He was a giant in ploughing terms and represented Ireland four times at the world championships, coming third in Spain to take bronze. He won many county senior titles and represented Kilkenny many times.
Although he never won a senior All Ireland title, he was runner up on a number of occasions and was actually awarded the All Ireland when the championships were held in Ardfert, but was told the following day that the marks had been added wrongly and that he had come second again.
He was gracious in defeat and just continued ploughing.
He farmed all his life at Luffany and was great vegetable grower and immersed himself in all types of farming. The 78 year old who died on January 15 had a life long association with the GAA and won a county junior medal with the club in the mid 1960s.
He was vice-president of the club at the time of his death and was steeped in its history and tradition. He was above all a family man and he leaves behind his heartbroken wife, Kitty; sons Eddie and Patrick, daughters Helen, Moira and Collette; sisters Mrs Theresa Dermody and Mrs Maria Aylward andn brother Matthew, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
His remains were brought from his home to St Kevin's Church, Carrigeen on Friday, January 17. The funeral Mass was on Saturday with Fr Peter Muldowney as main celebrant
Peter was buried afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
