September awards for Shefflin and Murphy
October 09, 2012
Henry Shefflin and Michael Murphy have been unveiled as the GAA/GPA All-Stars Players of the Month for September.
Both selections, chosen by the inter-county playing body, recognise the outstanding individual contributions both players made during their All Ireland finals last month.
Shefflin was the driving force behind Kilkenny's memorable comeback versus Galway, dragging his team back from the brink of defeat in a courageous display of skill, leadership and sheer determination.
These traits were seen once again in the replay as the Ballyhale man again led from the front in a high quality display, as he claimed an unprecedented ninth All Ireland medal, in the process sealing his place as one of the greatest players of all time.
Michael Murphy has earned the approval of his peers for his performance in the All Ireland final, captaining his side to victory against an impressive Mayo side and leading by example in a brilliant all round display.
This performance was capped by one of the all time great All Ireland final goals as he blasted past Mayo's David Clarke inside five minutes.
Commenting on the announcement, GAA President Liam O'Neill said: "Both Henry and Michael served up performances to savour with Kilkenny and Donegal respectively playing crucial roles in those counties' performances against Galway (Hurling) and Mayo (Football).
"These accolades are well deserved, well done to both and thanks to Opel for their continued support of an award scheme that allows our players to acknowledge excellence."
Gaelic Players Association CEO Dessie Farrell added: "Congratulations to Henry and Michael for their outstanding achievements in being acknowledged by their fellow players for their displays last month.
"While as always both will point to their team-mates, it is nonetheless important to recognise when the individual player excels in pursuit of the collective cause. Thanks to all the players who voted and to our sponsors Opel for their continued support of the awards and our players."
Commenting on the announcement, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, "Opel are proud to be associated with Gaelic Games and the GAA GPA All Star Awards.
