Tom Hickey RIP
Club members were shocked recently to hear of the untimely death of staunch club member and supporter Tommy Hickey 7, willow Close. Tommy took ill in the clubrooms on Saturday week where he often enjoyed a drink and chat in the company of his many friends. Tommy came to "the village" from his family home in Galmoy to work as an apprentice butcher in a victualler's shop close to the village pump. When the area was redeveloped in the 1970's Tom moved to a new premises in Jacob Street, where he enjoyed many years of successful trading in the local community. A native of Galmoy, Tommy loved hurling and lined out for his adopted club, James Stephens in all grades from minor to senior. He was a panel member of the 1969 senior championship winning side which brought the Walsh Cup to the parish after a long, 32 year absence. Only last year, Tom proudly attended the 40th anniversary re-union night of that famous victory in the clubrooms. During those years Tom met and married his late wife, Eileen (nee Grogan) and they had five children, Roisin, Noel, Yvonne, Kieran (RIP), and Kevin (RIP) We extend the sympathies of the club to his surviving children, his brothers, John, Paddy Noel, Peter, and Michael, and sisters, Marie, Joan, Breda and Margaret. On the removal, from his home window Close, club members, many of whom were "old comrades", formed a guard of honour. Tommy was laid to rest in Foulkstown cemetery in the heart of St Patrick's parish, a place he loved so well. Air dheis Dei go raibh a anam.
