Bergin, Liam

November 21, 2008
The death occurred of Liam Bergin, a native of Windgap, on November 2. Liam enjoyed good health all his life up to the last few months. Retired from farming, Liam worked all his life on the farm with his wife Margaret. Liam married Margaret Power, and they had five daughters and two sons. Liam's life rotated around Coolagh, where he went to school and later to the CBS in Callan. Liam enjoyed all sport but the game of football was very dear to him. In his youth football was the big game of the area. Coolagh in the 1930s to 1960s achieved a very high standard in the game. Liam was on the junior team for Coolagh that won the 1957 County Final and reached the Leinster final that year. Liam continued to play for his county in goal land later in centre field. He was a loyal and faithful servant to the community of Coolagh. He and his wife Margaret looked after the church on a weekly basis. Liam was responsible for taking up collection every Sunday in Coolagh for over 20 years. Liam will be missed in Coolagh Hall this time for the coming Christmas card games. He loved the game of cards and played almost nightly coming up to Christmas in Windgap, Kells and Dunnamaggin. Liam represented the old world of neighbourliness and friendship and it was in this way he got to know so many people. It was a fitting tribute to him in the enormous crowds that attended his funeral and burial. His funeral mass was celebrated by Rev Nicholas Flavin PP Dunnamaggin assisted by FR W Dalton, Fr Larry O'Keeffe, Fr M. Cleere, Fr Larry Wallace and Fr Benny O'Shea. Liam was buried in the old graveyard in Coolagh beneath the old palm tree in the family grave. A guard of honour formed by the Coolagh Pattern Caherleske-Coolagh Water Scheme walked by his coffin up the Hill of Coolagh and past the old shop and school as Liam bade farewell for the last time.
