Walsh, Joan

November 21, 2008
It is with pride and admiration we reflect on the life of the late Joan Walsh of Aglish, Mooncoin; New York and late of Ballybrazil, Mooncoin. Those of us that were fortunate to know Joan have our own special memories and there are many. She was of a pleasant, sociable disposition and endeared herself to many throughout her long life. Her life was absorbed in people, especially her family and friends and she valued people for their quality of character and goodness. Joan's family was paramount and she lavished kindness, attention and love to all family members all her life. Joan was educated at Carrigeen N.S and Mooncoin Vocational School where she excelled both academically and in the sporting arena. She had an avid love for sport and in particular camogie and played in goal with her native Mooncoin. Consequently Joan sustained a keen interest in hurling and the participation of her county in all GAA events down through the years. On completion of her secondary education, she worked in the Suir Hotel, Dublin for a number of years away from home with the late Annie Murphy. Joan was destined to travel sooner or later and in January 1951, accompanied by Mary Aylward (nee Walshe, Piltown) emigrated to the U.S where they remained life long friends. During her life time in New York, she paid regular visits to Gaelic Park, which was a big meeting venue for all the Irish people. It was there she looked forward with enthusiasm, to the arrival of the Kilkenny champions and associates on their many trips to New York over the years. Joan's years in New York were full and varied; she truly loved and enjoyed life there. Despite her vast numbers of years in the U.S, she never lost sight of her good Christian values or her roots and love of Aglish, family, neighbours and friends. Joan was highly valued by all who knew her, and has left treasured and fond memories behind. Her Requiem Mass was concelebrated in St. Kevin's Church, Carrigeen by Rev. Fr. Eamonn O'Gorman (P.P) Mooncoin, assisted by Rev. Fr. Tom Rogers (P.P) Holy family Waterford and Rev. Fr. Liam Barron (P.P) Mullinavat. The internment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Joan was predeceased by her brothers Richard and William Aglish and is survived by her sister Nora O'Hara Westmeath, brothers Walter Polerone and Nicholas ballybrazil, brother in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
