Glynn, John

November 21, 2008
A man who lived for his family and passed down to them the traits that made him such a loving father and husband, good friend, neighbour and true Christian was laid to rest. John Glynn, College Gardens, Callan Road, Kilkenny died with his sons and daughters by his side in St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny where he had been a patient for a number of days before he became ill. The 84 year old man was a dedicated family man who instilled love of Gaelic games, song and good humour in all his children. His funeral Mass, while harrowing for his immediate family, was like a celebration of his life. His son Brian spoke eloquently on the man they all called "Pop" and how he had helped every one of them. He spoke of John's love of Gaelic games and being brought to hurling and Gaelic football matches as a child. Rarely has there been such beautiful singing in St Fiachre's Church at the Mass and it was his daughter Aine and his grand-daughter Marie who led the way with the Tukulo choir and some of his other grandchildren Amy, Deirdre and Orla as well. The offeratory gifts included a family photo, prayer book and cap, GAA book, sliotar, football, putter, a deck of cards and the board gane Scrabble. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Roderick Whearty with Fr Gerry McSweeney. John Glynn was born in the village of Fohenagh, Caltra, co Galway in 1924 and played minor football for Galway. He later had the distinction of playing senior inter county football for Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim. He and his wife Margaret moved to Kilkenny in 1970 with their young family when he was appointed manager of ther Royal Liver Assurance company. Margaret is now a residence of Archersrath nursing home where she is very well cared for and where John visited her at least twice a day to tend for her needs. He is survived by his wife Margaret and chldren Ger, Kevin, Mairead, Mary, Brenda, Brian, Aine and Eithne; daughters-in-law; sons in law, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, niees, nephews, other relatives and friends.
