The Late Derek Galway The death of Derek Galway in Sydney, Australia, brings to mind the Bennettsbridge junior hurling team of sixty years ago that won the Northern JH championship final by beating Freshford on the score of 7-7 to 4-6. The 'Bridge defeated Slieverue in a replayed county final, Bennettsbridge 6-3, Slieverue 2-6. Team : Rd. Marnell, Derek Galway, Willie Murphy. Frank Costelloe, Billy Hayes, Paddy Nolan, Mick Jackman, Jack Brady, Ger Connolly, Mickey Kelly, Johnny Murphy, Dick Carroll, Larry McGrath, Paddy Hoban and Jim Brady. Derek was the last surviving brother of the Galway family, Newhouse. Before emigrating to Sydney, Derek gave sterling service to the Bennettsbridge club. Together with his five hurling brothers he helped the 'Bridge to their first junior hurling championship in 1948. He picked up his second junior title in 1951. Played in five senior championship finals throughout the 'fifties, winning four. Derek was last home in 2000 for the Golden Club celebrations. Derek died peacefully in Fairfield Hospital, Sydney on May 20. He is survived by his wife Barbara, children, Brendan, Lila and Bob; sister Maureen Kinsella (Gorey), grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Margaret, Josie and Brid, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Paddy, Tom, Mick, Jack, David (Australia), Joe and his sister, Eileen Murphy. Derek had lived in Sydney for over fifty years and was laid to rest in Forest Lawn, Leppington, Sydney. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Kilkenny People 6 June 2008
