Brian Cody says he paid little heed to what was being said about him and Kilkenny after they lost their first two games in this year's Allianz Hurling League.

One well-known newspaper columnist called for Cody to step down after the Cats' poor start to the campaign, but the James Stephen's clubman had the last laugh after overseeing his ninth Allianz League title win yesterday.

"With all due respect to everyone, it doesn't ever concern me what anyone's opinion is about Kilkenny. I think we look after the thing ourselves in our own place, and everyone has an opinion," he said.

"The great thing about everyone's opinion is that it can change today - whereas our opinion is tested the whole time and you have to deliver on it. Pundits predict and everything else. If they're wrong, it doesn't matter because they can go again."

Despite the impressive manner of their victory over Tipperary, Cody insists there's room for improvement ahead of next month's Leinster SHC opener against Dublin.

"There is huge work still to be done before we open against Dublin, but this will be a huge boost to the confidence of the players. The league has been a huge benefit to us and the young players who came into the team have shown they want to take the next step in their careers," he added.
