Scully, Tom

The Late Tom Scully There can be little doubt that it's not just Robertstown and its environs but a large part of Kildare generally which will be the poorer for the passing of the late Tom Scully of Robertstown who went to his eternal reward recently. Tom worked both the engineering and maintenance side of BNM Timahoe and in the Irish Ropes in Newbridge before going into business for himself some years ago. Over his working life he endeared himself to a vast range of people, work colleagues and customers alike. However, it was as a follower of Gaelic games both at club and county level that Tom became perhaps ever more 'famous'. A staunch member of Robertstown GFC and indeed a founder member of Mylerstown club which ultimately led to the reorganisation and reformation of the club in Robertstown. Tom was a keen student of the game at club level and it was indeed fitting that members of the local club provided a guard of honour at his removal and funeral. Tom's devotion to the game did not end there however, for over the years he became a well-known figure as a faithful member of the Lilywhites, travelling the length and breadth of Ireland. Indeed Tom carved out something of a niche in that area for if you were in his company you were guaranteed not to go hungry as the stories of his 'made on the spot' salad sandwiches made up from scallions and lettuce from his own garden became legendary. The story is told of a lady from St. Laurence's country that secured a ticket for the '98 All Ireland from a Roberstown source and ended up sitting beside Tom. They were of course total strangers to each other but by the end of the interval they were like long-lost relatives for Tom had fed not just her but half the section in the Hogan Stand with the fresh delicious products of his vegetable garden. On other occasions when the action was in Newbridge or some other local venue, Tom and his trusty bicycle were among the first to arrive regardless of the weather. A good husband and father, Tom and wife Eileen have brought up a family in Mylerstown who do them credit indeed. Unfortunately he was unable to be in Newbridge recently when his grandson Danny Scully - himself a promising footballer was mascot for the Lilywhites in a national league game. To Eileen and the girls, to Tom's friends and indeed to the many who mourn his passing, we convey deepest sympathy. Solas Na bhFlaitheas do. Courtesy of the Leinster Leader 7th July 2005
