Tiernan, John

April 14, 2005
The Late John Tiernan The death took place recently of John Tiernan, the eldest son of one of Rathangan's best known and respected families. A native of Newtown, he died at Tallaght Hospital having taken ill at his Knocklyon Manor home in Dublin. John spent most of his working life in the licensed trade in Dublin, and more recently Kildare. He had a long association with Dublin-based publicans Paul and Tom Mangan and the became manager of The Brewery Bar close to the Guinness brewery in Dublin when he was 21 years of age. He was later involved in a partnership with the Mangan brothers at The Stone Boat pub in Crumlin and later still at Murray's in Bath Avenue. More recently they took over Caulfield's on Maynooth's main street and the premises was reopened fitted out after being extensively refurbished. "We are very well respected by us and by all who came into contact with him. He is a huge loss to us and it would be true to say that he was more like a brother than a business partner. He worked with us all along the line and it was enjoyable to work alongside him. He was the main person in Caulfield's and we really didn't have anything to do with it. While he was there I think he liked the fact that he was back in Kildare." said Paul Mangan. Mr. Mangan added: " He was a very private person and he a did a lot of good things for people that nobody will ever know anything about. Outside of work his main passions were golf, walking his dog and Kildare football. He was a keen golfing enthusiast and was a founder member of Caulfield's Golf Society in Maynooth and was a member of Castle Barna Golf Club, near Daingean, Co. Offaly. But he is perhaps best known in Rathangan as a member of successful Gaelic Football teams. John was a member of team which won the club's second Kildare under 21 football championship title. Having eclipsed a highly rated Johnstownbridge side, who had won the previous year, they beat the Kilcock-Cappagh combination of St. Coca's as continent of players from the neighbouring Ellistown club. Fours years later he was on the Rathangan team which won the Kildare intermediate football championship in 1981, defeating Castledermot in the final. Burial took place to St Patrick's Cemetery, Rathangan, following requiem mass at St Colmcille's Church, Idrone Avenue, Knocklyon. The huge attendance showed the respect and esteem in which he was held by family, friends and business associates. Predeceased by his father Kevin, John is survived by his mother Maureen, partner Reta and step-children Danielle and Mitchel; sisters Mary, Rose, Ann, Joan, Claire, Brid and Susan; brother Liam and beloved dog Levi. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Leinster Leader 14th April 2005
