Minor Final Div 4
Rheban's first Minor team in about 16/17 years took to the field and lifted the Minor league title on Saturday night in a 2-12 to 1-10 win over Ballykelly.
Amazingly at the start of the year none of this seemed possible as Rheban and many of the parents had serious reservations about even entering the Minor Competition due to the very young panel of players available
Despite this extremely young panel consisting of only 2 proper of the age Minors our young lads dug deep against all the odds and won out against a strong undefeated Ballykelly side.
Ballykelly were first to open the scoring with a point after 1minute but Rheban responded with 2 quick points from Nathen Owens and Conor Germaine.Another Ballykelly point followed to level it up once more but again Rhebans young charges were proving successful in front of the posts with a Dean Carthy point and a Sean Kelly Goal after the ball spilled from a Ballykelly save.
Amazingly 10 of Rhebans starting 15 were all on Rhebans under 16 team but our boys were moving the ball well and even though Rheban, due to the young average age were well outmatched Physically ,speed wise our lads were moving well. .A great Conor Germaine Goal and two quick points from Dean Carthy and Nathen Mackey put Rheban into a 2-05 to 0-04 lead but Ballykelly went on the attack again and looked extremely dangerous moving forward and 3 great points followed .The last two scores were Rhebans with points from Kealen McConville and a fisted effort from Christopher Casey to leave it Rheban 2-07,Ballykelly 0-06.
The restart saw Ballykelly on the attack but a wonderful interception and solo run by Kealen McConville saw him split the posts and a pointed free from Dean Carthy saw Rheban extend its lead.
With 8 minutes gone a spell of Ballykelly pressure was to see a great goal and a point immediately after which saw only 5 points in it.Two Rheban frees pushed it back out to 7 but Ballykelly were getting on top and 3 unanswered points and a goal chance saw a real danger of Rhebans young team being caught.
The game was to take a turn for the worst however and after several off the ball incidents and after several yellow cards for both sides Ballykelly found themselves a man down. One last pointed free from Nathen Mackey saw it 2-12 to 1-10 and now with Ballykelly down to 14men the pressure eased.
At the final whistle this very young Rheban team had prevailed against the odds.Amazingly seventeen of this young team plays u16 football and ten of the seventeen were on the starting panel ,a fantastic achievement from Rhebans juveniles.
