Dowling, Paddy
July 17, 2012Sadness descended in Celbridge and Straffan when the news broke of the sudden death of Paddy (Patrick) Dowling, a former chairman of Celbridge Gaa, who passed away on 4th July in the Coronary Care Unit of Naas Hospital. Paddy had a life long passion and love of all things GAA.
He had a very successful playing career with Straffan GAA when he was a member of the 1959 Championship winning team and again in 1964 he was on the team that won the Junior A Jack Higgins Cup & the Intermediate League championship. After his playing career ended he took up the referee's whistle with a passion and became the man in the middle where he made the difficult calls but always with a sense of justice and fairness. He enthusiastically embraced the role and became well known referee in the county. Paddy had a great live of music and was a talented and self-taught musician. He played with the local Shamrock Star Ceili band and local musicians across the length and breadth of the county and further afield. Fr Paul Taylor celebrated his funeral mass in Straffan and Paddy was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery in his beloved Straffan on Saturday 7th July.
Deepest Sympathy is extended to his family & friends. He is survived by his wife Catherine (Cal), Caroline, Patrick, Susan, Martina, Olivia, Paul and Robert, sisters, brothers, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces & nephews, relativities and friends. May he rest in peace.
