Bergin, Brian

January 01, 2001
The death of Brian Bergin of Ballybrophy has robbed the area of one of its real characters and wonderful sportsmen. Brian played hurling with Kilcotton since his youth. He played in the intermediate hurling final of '83 although only seventeen years of age. They were beaten by Camross but returned a year later to defeat Colt in the final. He then played in three successive U21 finals claiming a winners medal in 1986. He again helped the club reach the intermediate final of '88 only to lose to rivals Borris-Ossory. Four years later he played a major role when the club defeated Ballinakill in a thrilling final captained by Eddie Higgins. That was his last medal until ironically last month a junior team captained by Eddie Higgins won the Div Five League title with Brian playing at the heart of the defence, defeating Shanahoe. On the Friday prior to his passing Kilcotton opened their championship campaign with a comfortable victory over Abbeyleix. Brian was once again the outstanding defender wearing the No. two shirt. Along with Owen Coss they are the only remaining with the team beaten in '83 and winners in '84. On Sunday morning he went on his daily training run around his beloved Kilcotton GAA grounds. He had later planned to play golf and watch the World Cup Final. Sadly he was found at the goalpost where he had died suddenly. His death has shocked Kilcotton GAA and everywhere around where he was widely known. He was also a keen dog follower. Sincere sympathy to his wife Anna (nee Kirby) of Cullahill, his parents Sean and Betty (nee Nolan), brothers Pat, Robert, John and David, sisters Bernie and Marie. His remains were removed to Borris-in-Ossory and burial took place in Knockaroo. May he rest in peace. - courtesy of the Leinster Express 6th July 2002
