The Late Tom Hendy

Mention of Ballyteague brings to mind the recent passing of one of its best-known and popular residents. Tom Hendy who passed away recently. To say that Tom was a big man would be no exaggeration, big in stature and big in heart. A native of the Athy area he farmed extensively in Ballyteague, where in later years he had some noted successes in the area of horse breeding along with his son-in-law Aidan Flanagan, having some winners on the track with horses who ran under the 'Grangeclare' name.

Over the years he was a generous supporter of the local GAA club, giving the use of the field, which has since become their official home, Pairc Ui Thaidhg.
A noted antiquarian, for many years he kept an extensive collection of items from times past. During the '60's he played a prominent role, along with Fr. PJ Murphy in the Canal festa in Robertstown.

A man of great faith, he was a regular worshipper In the Cathedral in Kildare town.
His passing leaves a void in the locality but nowhere will that void be more keenly felt that in the bosom of his own family. To his wife, son, daughters, other family members and indeed to all who mourn this gentle giant of a man, we convey deepest sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh se.
