Carey, Paddy

August 19, 2006
The late Paddy Carey We were sorry to hear of the death of an old Star man, Paddy Carey, who passed away on Saturday, August 12th, 2006. Paddy, who had been domiciled in Tralee for many years, was a member of a well-known Carey family of Milland, Gortnaclohy. Paddy served his time as a compositor in The Southern Star in the latter part of the 1930s. He left Skribbereen in 1941 and spent a brief period in England before returning to Ireland and to Tralee where he took up employment with The Kerryman newspaper where he spent the rest of his working life. Paddy was a fine sportsman and in his younger days was a very prominent hurler and footballer with Skibbereen, and was also secretary of local GAA club for a few years. Indeed, Paddy and his brothers were for many years great servants of the Skibbereen club, on and off the field. He retained that interest in GAA when in Tralee, and in 1966 when the Kerry County Hurling Board was formed, Paddy was its first secretary. Paddy is survived by his ten children, including Niall, who lives at the old homestead at Milland, and two brothers, Ted and Gerald, and a large extended family. Courtesy of Southern Star 19/08/2006
