The late John Molyneaux The unexpected death of well-known local teacher John Molyneaux has left the people of Listowel deeply shocked and saddened this week. Mr Molyneaux, who was 62, influenced many young North Kerry men during a successful 38 year career as an Irish and History teacher at St Michael's College, Listowel, a position from which he retired just two years ago. A great lover of the outdoor life, the late Mr Molyneaux was a keen angler, a member of Ballybunion Golf Club, an avid gardener and a great follower of all things GAA. One of his prized possessions was said to be a Cork County Championship medal which he won during his student days in UCC. Originally from Woodford, Listowel, he attended Derrindaffe National School in Duagh and then completed his secondary education at St Michael's College, Listowel. After graduating from UCC, he initially taught at St Kieran's College in Kilkenny before returning home to Listowel to take up a position at his alma mater. Principal of St Michael's Johnny Mulvihill, who had the unusual claim of being both Mr Molyneaux's past pupil and later his boss, this week paid tribute to a man whom he descried as 'an excellent teacher'. "He was a totally committed teacher, a fantastic colleague and a great support to me when he was teaching here," he said. "One of the great things about John was that he was never absent. "I don't every remember him missing a days work. And he was a man who had great faith." Mr Molyneaux is survived by his wife Teresa, who is a teacher at Scoil Realta na Maidne in Listowel; sons Edward and Raymond and daughters Antoinette and Helena. He had four brothers - Mossie, Dan, the late Andy, who was a former secretary of the Kerry County Board and Fr Ted who is based in South Africa; as well as two sisters, Mary and Eileen.
