Kerry hurling manager Ciaran Carey is hoping his team can follow in the footsteps of Leicester City and take Division 1B by storm.

The Kingdom are newcomers to the National Hurling League's second tier after achieving promotion against all odds in 2015 and are favourites for relegation heading into this weekend's opening round of fixtures.

However, Carey sees no reasons why his side can't defy the odds again and emulate the likes of Leicester City, who have stunned the football world by leading a crusade in the Premiership which currently sees them sitting top of the table with 13 games to go.

"Look, anything can happen in sport, no matter what the game is," Carey told the Irish Examiner.

"If you take soccer, for example, few would have predicted at the start of the season that Leicester City would be top of the table right now.

"So once you have commitment, once you have a squad who want to do well and who prepare for the test ahead then anything is possible and you never know where it might take you."

Kerry open their Division 1B campaign this Sunday against Laois at O'Moore Park (throw-in 2pm).
