Christy Ring round-up

May 11, 2013
Kerry and Meath secured their place in the Christy Ring Cup semi-finals while there were also wins for Wicklow and Down.

A Shane Nolan inspired Kerry scored a 0-14 to 0-8 win over Derry at Austin Stack Park. The home side, led by six at the interval (0-10 to 0-4). Nolan was responsible for eight of the Kingdom's first half tally while Paddy Henry and Brendan Rogers registered scores for the visitors.

Despite playing with the wind, Ger Rogan's Derry could only only manage three second half points against a strong Kerry defence.

It took extra-time to separate Kildare and Meath in Newbridge and it was the visitors that came out on top on a scoreline of 0-22 to 1-16. If it wasnt for some heroic goalkeeping from Kildare's Paul Dermody, Meath could have snatched it at the death in normal time. However, it ended 1-13 to 0-16 after 70 minutes.

Andy O'Brien notched 3-10 as Wicklow made up for last weeks one point loss to Derry with a impressive 4-19 to 3-10 victory over Mayo.

A brace of goals from Kenny Feeney gave Mayo a 2-7 to 1-8 interval lead. However, Wicklow took the game by the scruff of the neck from the restart when O'Brien grabbed his second goal. Casey O'Brien's charges went on to hit 2-10 without reply.

Feeney, who finished with 3-3 to his name, netted late on for Mayo but it was only consolation.

Ger Monan's Down also recovered from their first round defeat with a 1-20 to 1-11 win over Ulster rivals Armagh in Crossmaglen. A strong opening half was the platform for the Mourne Men as they went in 0-12 to 0-5 infront.
