Bryan Sheehan admits he has a battle on his hands to regain his place in the Kerry team for the championship.

The former All Star midfielder missed most of the Allianz Football League with an ankle injury, but is determined to force his way back into the starting XV this summer.

"I was struggling during the league with my fitness. I had an operation before Christmas on my ankle," the St. Mary's man explained to the Irish Examiner.

"I had not kicked a ball since the Donegal game. I played with South Kerry in the championship so the last time I kicked a ball was against Stacks in October, I suppose I left my fitness levels drop and when I came back I was struggling for fitness and I got injured again and that set me back another five or six weeks, where I could not train.

"My first time back training was in the lead up to the Cork game, and since then I have put the foot down and have been working hard.

"I am going to be fighting to get my place back in the team, I will be giving it everything I can but so will Anthony (Maher), David (Moran) and Johnny (Buckley) as they will trying to nail down a slot as well. But it's all over the team, in the forwards and in the backs so it just shows the strength and depth of our squad this year."
