Broderick, Maurice

January 12, 2012
After a full and happy life Maurice Broderick, locally known as Mossie Brouder, Lavalla, Brosna passed away peacefully on January 2nd at home with his family.

Born in May 1927, he was one of five children the others being Breeda, Julia, Nora Mary and Patie. As a family they endured the tragedy of losing their mother when Mossie was only five years old. He cherished her memory and spoke of her often. Although he was blessed with a gentle and loving father, he always maintained that a mother was the most important person in your life.

Mossie always wore a smile. From a young age he had an incredibly polite and cheerful manner and had a magnificent rapport with everyone he encountered, especially with his family. He was a fantastic father, grandfather, husband, brother, neighbour and friend who appreciated everything he had.

Mossie was a countryman through and through who loved the land and nature. He liked nothing more than planting his garden in the spring and being out around the farm tending to the cattle and looking after his cats and dogs.
In his younger days Mossie was a member of the Brosna drama group and travelled far and wide around the country. He often spoke about these to his family in later years.
Mossie married the love of his life Sheila in 1964 and they went on to have three children and later eight grandchildren. The couple played a very important part in their grandchildren's lives and Mossie has left many good memories for them to cherish.
He had many passions in life, one of which was the Brosna Fine Gael club. He was president of the local Fine Gael Cumann and canvassed for his local councillors right to the end.

Another passion was GAA and he was one of the vice-presidents of the Brosna club. He followed his team to matches and was very proud to see his two sons and son-in-law playing.
Monday night was the highlight of Mossie's week - his local card game. In true Mossie style he was the last to arrive. People travelled from neighbouring parishes for a great night and his door was always open. No one left without a cup of tea or his own speciality - a milky coffee with 'a drop'.

To the very end, he had a great memory for tracing relations and loved family and friends calling to the house where many a story from the past was told. He was well known for his whistling ability and the memory of his whistling will echo around the hillside of Lavalla.

At Mossie's removal and funeral the affection in which he was held was evident. The guard of honour was provided by his card game friends, Fine Gael members and the GAA on his final journey to the new cemetery in Brosna.
Mossie will be sadly missed by his loving wife Sheila, children Bernie, Mike and Tim, daughter-in-law Tracy, son-in-law JJ, grandchildren Cora, Jack, Shannon, Lorna, Emily, Murish, Liam and Jeaic, sisters Julia and Nora Mary, sister-in-law Norrie, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, relatives and the many friends who he held dear.
May he rest in peace.
