Martin, Eamon

February 02, 2012
On Sunday evening, January 8th at 9pm, Eamon Martin, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, and originally Cahersiveen was called to his eternal reward.Twelve months ago, Eamon faced his greatest challenge when he was diagnosed with a very serious illness. He faced it with determination and courage. Eamon came to Dungarvan in the mid-seventies, to take up a position in the local CBS secondary school. He would eventually go on to take the position of vice-principal; he was a popular, capable and competent individual. Eamon was interested in many and varied sports, from fishing to rowing boats, and he was involved in a horse and greyhound syndicate. He also enjoyed a bit of running and cycling.

As one would expect from a proud son of Kerry, Eamon's first love - as he often said himself - was the "big ball."
Upon arrival in Dungarvan, Eamon immediately threw his low in with the Brickey Rangers, as a player, a mentor and, later as an administrator; with many others he played a huge part in the development of that fine club and its facilities out there in the heart of the Brickey Valley. Eamon had many greats Gaels among his friends and if assistance was required, for tips on coaching, tactics and so forth, they were only a phone call away, and they never let him down, he often told of the many conversations he had with the mighty Mick O'Dwyer, Larry Tomkins, Jack O'Shea and Jack O'Connor to name but a few. He was also a tremendous Deise hurling supporter.

Eamon had a very keen interest in left wing politics. In 1981 joined the Workers Party and in 1992 he was among the founding members of Democratic Left.
A shrewd political thinker and tactician, Eamon was an excellent Director of Elections in several local elections. In 1999, Eamon became the first chair of the Dungarvan James Connolly Branch of the Labour Party.

Eamon was a man of principle, he had wonderful, finely-tuned social conscious; he was a man of vision and his integrity, his honesty and his straight talking shone out like a torch in the dark. His political views were no obstacle to him enjoying the company of people of other parties or persuasions. Indeed he had a close, lifelong friendship wtih former Fianna Fail TD, his old schoolmate and neighbour John O'Donoghue. Removal took place from Jerh O'Connor's Funeral Home, Wilton, Cork to O'Connell Memorial Church, Caherciveen. Burial took place on Wednesday in Holy Cross Cemetery.
May the sod of his native Cahersiveen lie gently on him, and may be forever rest in peace.
