O'Shea, Denis

Fond memories of a husband, father and footballer

The death took place on June 22nd of Denis O'Shea, Knockglossmore, Camp, Tralee in Muckross Ward, Kerry General Hospital. Aged 78, he had been ill and was undergoing dialysis for some time.

Born on the 14th April 1932 to parents Bat and Jane O'Shea, he had two sisters Maureen and Noreen. Maureen married the well known handballer Jimmy O'Brien and Noreen married Michael O'Toole.
Denis started his working life CIE as a temporary porter in the early '50s and was appointed a bus conductor in 1956. His love of driving led him to change career to and he was appointed a driver in 1966, a job he loved for thirty years. In later years he drove mainly to Dingle, almost daily passing his own house on route.
Denis was a member of the three in a row Camp team that won the Castlegregory League in 1949, 1950 and 1951. He then went on to play for Kerins O'Rahillys where they won the County Championship in 1954 and 1957. He also played for Kerry, winning the All-Ireland in 1955 and the National League in 1959. During his time with Strand Road he stayed with the Kissane family who became his lifelong friends.
Denis was a very sociable person who enjoyed his pint along with friends. He enjoyed his annual holidays in Mayo, where his wife Kathleen hails from, going to the bog to cut his turf, and the friendly game of cards with his neighbours. He loved driving and cars were a big passion in during his lifetime.
His love of football continued after his playing career finished and he followed the exploits of Annascaul, Strand Road and his beloved Kerry with equal interest. He is remembered by his wife Kathleen and his son Bart.
Removal took place from Hogan's Funeral Home to St. Mary's Church, Camp followed by burial in New Cemetery, Camp.
