Limerick's Ciaran Carey

Limerick legend Ciaran Carey has criticised the County Board for showing a lack of respect to past players after he lost out on the Under 21 manager's role for 2015.

The three-time All-Star held the position this year but the County Board have decided to replace him with John Kiely.

Brian Ryan, who guided the Shannonsiders to back-to-back Munster MHC titles, has also been told that his services are surplus to requirements as the top table is to put forward Leo O'Connor for ratification tonight.

"I believe this needs to be highlighted," Carey told The Irish Independent.

"Looking at Limerick hurling down through the years, a pattern has developed around managerial positions, whether minor, under 21 or senior.

"They don't seem to have enough respect for the past players and the past managers and they are getting away with it all the time.

"If you look at the calibre of players I named out and if you want to go to the minors you are talking Eamonn Cregan, Brian Ryan and Stephen McDonagh. They suffered a clean sweep."

A Board spokesman responded by saying that the process was fair and talked up Kiely's managerial credentials.

He also said it was usual to give minor management two-year terms and there was an ongoing policy to develop managers as well as players using this system.
