Joe Deane a hero for Cork on many occassions.

Joe Deane rolled back the years with a virtuoso performance for his club Killeagh in the Cork SHC relegation final in Riverstown on Saturday.

The former Cork star, who is now 37, scored 0-9 (0-7 from placed balls) from midfield as the east Cork club avoided the dreaded drop thanks to a 1-18 to 0-16 victory over Courcey Rovers.

A relieved Killeagh manager Sean Crowley paid tribute to Deane when stating in the Irish Examiner: "Cometh the hour Joe Deane.

"Earlier this year, we had lost a number of players through retirements and had to use all our persuasive powers to get Joe to continue playing. His performance in the last 10 minutes of tonight's game was the best I've seen.

"He is an inspiration to all the young lads coming up and we have some great talent on the way. The key now is to keep Joe playing for another season."

In the weekend's SHC fourth round games, Sarsfields defeated divisional side Carrigdhoun 0-14 to 0-11, St. Finbarr's overcame Erin's Own by 3-12 to 1-9, while four players were sent off - including county star Patrick Horgan - in Glen Rovers' 2-16 to 1-8 victory over city rivals Bishopstown.
