"I don't think we've seen the best of him yet"

1996 Wexford All-Ireland winner Dave Guiney reckons the best is yet to come from his son Jack.

Jack is following in the footsteps of his father and uncle Rod who achieved the ultimate honour in hurling 18 years ago.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, Dave revealed how he and brother Rod were latecomers to the small ball code as rugby was their first love (their father Jack represented Ireland in the forties) but said they made up for a lack of skill with hard graft.

"I think he (Jack) is a more naturally gifted player," the 44-year-old - who is still playing junior hurling for Rathnure - remarked.

"I don't think we've seen the best of him yet. I think he is developing. He had put in some tremendous performance for the club here.

"We (Dave and Rod) were fighters, we were workers - we came from a smaller club. We didn't do an awful lot of hurling. We had to train very hard to make up for the deficiencies in ours skills.

"I don't think Jack has that problem. I think he is a very, very skilful guy. I was 12-and-a-half-stone, just six foot. He's 6'3" and 14 stone. He is a big guy."
