Hurling gets Superbowl exposure

February 02, 2012
A Kilkenny man has been instrumental in bringing hurling to Superbowl fans in the US.

As the States braces itself for Sunday's NFL Superbowl extravaganza between New York Giants and New England Patriots, Conaghy man Ciaran Connery - an officer of Indianapolis hurling club - helped secure a four-hour slot for hurling on the astro turf pitch in the Superbowl village.

This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the ancient Irish game to Superbowl fans and Connery told The Kilkenny People that the reaction was incredible:

"The Americans are in awe of the game of hurling. It is unbelievable the way they have taken to the game; they love it.

"We did very well to get as much time as we did. It went down a treat. The people are amazed and fascinated by hurling and they love having a go at it.

"The Americans who have joined our club are mad about hurling. They now consider it the best game in the world.

"Who knows where this latest invitation from the NFL Superbowl organising committee will lead to?"
