Munster Council make history with first live streaming

January 30, 2012

Tipperary's John O'Brien and Timmy Hammersley lead the team to the pitch.
A small piece of technological history was made at the weekend when the charity senior hurling challenge between Tipperary and a Munster selection in Nenagh was the first game to be streamed live on the Munster GAA website.

Wearing pink jerseys for the occasion, Tipp emerged victorious on a 1-19 to 1-13 scoreline and, in the process, raised over €7,000 for Breast Cancer Ireland. Delighted with the feedback they received to Saturday's streaming, Munster Council now hopes to stream live games which do not receive live television coverage, including U21 and minor championship fixtures and the forthcoming Harty Cup and Corn Ui Mhuiri finals.

"Saturday was really only a pilot project from our perspective," Munster Council PRO Ed Donnelly explained to hoganstand.com

"While we were very pleased with the feedback, there are areas we need to improve on. But last Saturday was a start and it's something we are keen to develop in conjunction with Croke Park. The technology is there and we might as well use it."

Ed recalled how "technical difficulties" had scuppered the Council's plans to stream last year's Harty and Corn Ui Mhuiri Cup finals live, though they were still delighted with the response to deferred coverage of the finals.

"This year's Harty Cup final is on February 26 and the Corn Ui Mhuiri is on March 4. They are two games we would definitely hope to stream live. We are also looking at games that don't get TV coverage. It's all about generating more interest in our games," he added.
