Dunne: Tipp not motivated by stopping five-in-a-row

September 02, 2010
Tommy Dunne insists Tipperary are not motivated by stopping Kilkenny's bid for a five-in-a-row of All-Ireland titles.

Dunne, who was the last Tipp captain to lift the Liam McCarthy Cup in 2001 and is currently involved with the Premier County's under 21 team which will face Galway in the All-Ireland final on Saturday week, said: "I don't think that's the incentive really.

"I think the incentive will be for them to win their own championship. I don't think that will be the real motivating thing and it won't matter to Tipp.

"It may be a sort of a slagging match thing with the supporters, but I don't think it'll register for the players or management."

Dunne was highly impressed by Tipp's semi-final display against Waterford, particularly that of his Toomevara club colleague John O'Brien, who scored 0-6 from play.

"He's a very talented player who is vastly experienced and is capable of producing those type of performances. Johnno contributed to the 2001 championship in a serious way. He came on down in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in the Munster final in '01 and hit two points from play in a game we won narrowly.

"It was nice to see him play well, just from a personal point of view because he's been around the block. Johnno would feel he probably should be on the team and he proved his point very well."
