County Championships taking shape INTERMEDIATE SINGLES: Four great players take part in the Intermediate grade semi finals. The favourite on paper must be Christopher Doolin who plays Niall McGrath at Coman's on Friday, January 15th at 8 p.m. In the other semi-final, Niall McDermott from the Ballymoe club plays Aengus Cunningham. An injury doubt hangs over Cunningham, action gets underway on Friday, January 15th in Coman's at 7 p.m. The final is scheduled for Saturday, January 30th at 5 p.m.. INTERMEDIATE DOUBLES: The final takes place in St. Coman's on Saturday, January 23rd at 5 p.m. It should be a terrific contest as four of Roscommon's best players Christopher Doolin/Aengus Cunningham (St. Coman's) v Niall McGrath (Coman's)/Neil McDermott (Ballymoe) step into the arena. It's a hard game to call. JUNIOR SINGLES: Coman's clubmates Thomas McGrath and Niall Gordon will meet in the quarter-final. There are two other games down for decision Creaton v O'Connor and Sean Jennings v P. Maughan. The final is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th. JUNIOR DOUBLES: The line-up in the semi-finals is are follows: Denis Creaton/ Sean Jennings (Lisacul) v Tom McGrath/Niall Gordon (Coman's) and Phillip O'Connor/Cormac O'Brien (Curraghboy) v Steve Joyce/ John Kennedy (Ballymoe). The final is fixed for January 16th, at 5 p.m.probably in St Coman's. THE JUNIOR B Singles competition is coming to a close. Shane Hennelly is through to the final. He recorded an exciting semifinal success against Nigel Neilan on a 18-21, 21-19, 21-4 scoreline. Dara O'Gara will play Oisin Naughton in the quarter-final. The final is due to take place on January 16th. JUNIOR B DOUBLES: This competition is more or less straightforward. In the semi-final, Oisin Naughton and Shane Hennelly of St Coman's play the strong, competitive Paul Kelly and Donal O'Connor of Curraghboy. The game is scheduled for January 6th but it may be postponed. Seamus Connolly and Derek Ward of Ballymoe await the winner in the final. All players should contact the county secretary regarding times and venues. PAKE DOYLE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT: The Pake Doyle Memorial doubles tournament in St. Brigid's Handball Club in Curraghboy was an outstanding success. It was testament to the marvellous work of Seamus McHugh, Frank Harney, Gerard Walshe, and to Teresa McHugh and the committee who did the catering from 10.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.. The results were: Denis Creaton/Sean Jennings (Lisacul) beat Paul Kelly and Donal O'Connor (Curraghboy) 31-23; Oisin Naughton /Thomas McGrath (Coman's) defeated Gerard Walshe/ Seamus McHugh (Curraghboy) 31-25; Chris Doolin/ Niall Gordon (Coman's) v Ollie Conway/Alan Tierney (Williamstown) 31-22; Cormac O'Brien/Phillip O'Connor (Curraghboy) defeated Peter and David Davoran (Healdford, Galway) 31-24; Sean Jennings/ Denis Creaton (Lisacul) beat Lorcan Maughan/Neil McDermott 31-23. Quarter-Finals: Billy Mullins/Jim Guilfoyle (Birr) defeated O. Naughton/T. McGrath (Coman's) 31-13; C. Doolin/N. Gordon (Coman's) defeated Kevin Craddock/Trevor Hannon (Galway) 31-14; David Hope/N. Murphy (Offaly) defeated C. O'Brien/P. O'Connor (Coman's) 31-23. Semi-Finals: D. Creaton /S. Jennings defeated B. Mullins/J. Guilfoyle 31-19; P. Hope/N. Murphy defeated C. Doolin/Niall Gordon 31-20. Final: David Hope/N. Murphy (Offaly) defeated Sean Jennings and Denis Creaton (Lisacul) 31-25. Seamus McHugh was the referee. Other referees included Gerard Walshe and PJ Moran. Presentations were made by St. Brigid's Club President Mr Frank Kenny. The plate tournanment played in Coman's and Curraghboy resulted in a great win for Coman's pair Oisin Naughton and Thomas McGrath. The results were as follows: G. Walshe/S. McHugh defeated D. O'Connor/P. Kelly; P and D. Davoran defeated A. Tierney/P. O'Connor; O. Naughton/T. McGrath defeated N. McDermott/L. Maughan; T. Hannon/K. Craddock defeated C. O'Brien/P. O'Connor. In the final Oisin Naughton and Thomas McGrath defeated the Davoran cousins from Galway on a scoreline of 26-14. THIRD LEVEL INTERVARSITIES 40 X 20 SINGLES: The third level championships will take place from Friday, January 29th to Sunday, January 31st. A number of players from the county will be taking part.
