All-Ireland MHC semi-final: O'Shea fires champions to facile win

July 28, 2018

Galway's Niall Collins scores a goal despite pressure from Eoin Carney of Dublin

Galway 3-22

Dublin 0-16

Donal O'Shea landed a dozen points from placed balls as Galway hammered Dublin by 15 points at Croke Park this afternoon to set up an All-Ireland final showdown with either Tipperary or Kilkenny.

The full forward, who is a son of former Tipperary manager Eamon O'Shea, was in unerring form as Jeff Lynskey's charges moved within 60 minutes of retaining the Irish Press Cup. Leinster champions Dublin gave as good as they got in a first half which saw the sides level nine times. Liam Dunne was accurate from frees, but the holders got a big break just before half-time when Niall Collins fielded a high ball and finished past Dublin 'keeper Jack Lambert to give his side a 1-10 to 0-10 interval lead.

Galway resumed with points from Adam Brett, Diarmuid Kilcommins and Sean McDonagh to lead by 1-14 to 0-12 after 40 minutes. They then put the game beyond Dublin's reach when Brett capitalised on a mistake by Patrick Rabbitte to rattle the net and Dean Reilly added a third goal a minute later.

Dublin replied with points from Dunne, Aaron O'Toole and Darragh McLoughney, but Galway hit back with scores from Kilcommins, Jason O'Donoghue and Oisin Flannery to ease into their fourth All-Ireland final in five years.
